Sewing with Nature

February 4th, 2009

I made a last minute decision to enter a sewing contest.  (What was I thinking?) The theme Sewing with Nature seemed like fun. I started yesterday by dying some white muslin from my stash with spinach. Then today I sewed up a basic a-line skirt and added a dandelion. Pretty simple, but I’m pleased with the results. Probably won’t win anything, but that’s ok - Caemlyn still has a new spring skirt that only cost me the $ I spent on the bunch of spinach. lol

This was the best one I had that showed the brown stems on the blown seeds.

And, an action shot of Caemlyn twirling in the front yard.

I will say, working with nature is kinda rough when most of nature is dead/sleeping at the moment. I thought a blown dandelion fit Caemlyn’s personality though.

Way cool. I wasn’t following you when you were telling me on the phone, but I get it now. What is the dandelion fluff made out of? Caemlyn is a lucky girl to be the recipient of mommy’s creativity. Spinach - huh? That is probably the first time you bought spinach, cuz I am pretty certain you won’t eat it - ha! Correct me if I am wrong ;)

The dandelion fluff is made out of eyelash yarn that I piled on and sewed free-motion. First time buying fresh spinach, we’ve used frozen spinach a few times to make steak and spinach pinwheels. And I certainly wasn’t going to eat this spinach after boiling it for over an hour. ick.

What a cute skirt! I LOVE the dandelion fluff. And the spinach-dying process made it a lovely light color.
